Recollections

Thanks to all the alumni who sent in their favorite memories of their days at UGA.

Here are samples of some of the recollections in the book:

While in law school, I would play Frisbee golf with Mike Mills (a former UGA student and member of the rock band, R.E.M.). Using lamp posts and trash cans as targets, we would start at the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building. The course went through North Campus down to P-J, then we would come back and end up at the 18th hole by the president’s office.

I remember waking up on game days in Morris Hall, opening the creaky old blinds and seeing a wave of folks wearing red coming down from Broad Street. After a quick shower and coffee, we would throw on a Bulldogs t-shirt and walk right outside to join the masses for another sweet Saturday of Georgia Bulldogs football.

I vividly remember sneaking into the music department in the Fine Arts Building to use the practice rooms for song writing. Because I wasn’t a music major, I often was scolded and chased out by the music professors. Despite this, I wrote some pretty good songs during those stolen moments and ultimately chose a career in the music business after starting college in pre-vet, then graduating in Journalism.

In 1975, during my senior year, the University reduced the hours that the Graduate Studies Library was open. In protest, I, along with the other officers of the pre-medical honor society (AED) staged a sit-in that included over 100 students. I argued that if the university had money to plant black-eyed susans on campus, they could find money to keep the library open. I ended up on the cover of The Red and Black, in state newspapers and on television for about a week. In response to our protest, the State Legislature released emergency funds and the library was able to resume its normal hours.

The one UGA experience I will always remember is the first time I played the traditional “Battle Hymn” trumpet solo in Sanford Stadium. For a classical musician, there are very few chances to play for 92,000 cheering fans.
